I lost all my brush pallets in Corel Painter, so I decided to try and create a new load of brushes, includong blenders, while doing a test. I think it is the best way as you are using the brush for a real application. Here I found a brilliant, loose, painting and used it for referance. I now have two blenders and an oil brush although I am not happy with the oil brush yet.

Fantasy art!
Ok its been a while, all sorts of things going on but not been anything I can post. Here is an image I have been fiddling with for a week or so. A possible job for the studio was to produce a CGI poster for a martial arts game. No real brief as the job got blown out but I just cobbled some ideas together. I didn't do enough design for the thing, as I say there was no real brief. but looking at ImageFX mag I wanted to try something similar.

Nearly there.
I have done a fair amount to the image in the last post. Added more canvas and even done some measuring to get the proportions right.
I have found that I have to set canvas to 'artists canvas' when openening the file again to keep the texture. Working in Corel Painter IX by the way. Using the chalk brush and blender tool.

This a video of the photoshot test I did back in July. A good size copy of this is on an earlier blog below.
I started the layout and then moved it down before finishing the piece.

At the easel for 30mins.
This picture was taken by one of my boys, Danny.
I had 30 minutes to paint before the family was going out so I decided to paint the view from the cottage patio.
I would have finished but I decided to add some sheep (they came into the field next to the cottage) and this slowed me down.
I will finish them and post the end product.

Walking the dog..and painting!
So I finally got away with the family for a small holiday and managed a couple of quick paintings.
Not finished but here is some pics I took on my phone of the event.
Yes it was nice and hot on the coast in Poole Dorset. Yogi found some shade behind the seat but I managed to get sun burned.

CAR PHOTOSHOP
This is an image created in photoshop.. Its not quite finished but I have wanted to get it posted for a while as I am going to alter it and want to see if I can get to what I was originaly after with the design.
I feel that as I finish up a design it loses its 'life' and becomes stiff and stagnent. Original idea came from a great image of a Vauxhall Astra coupe, although the title of the image was 'Holdensmallcar'.

Came across a'photobucket' web page of the wife and our dog? So i thought I could put an image of him up here. It was drawn using Karismacolor pencil. Drawn from a photo I used it on the back of the Christmas card. Yogi came to us from a rescue centre and had been poorly looked after before that. His ears have been mutilated. The Australian Kelpie has large pointed ears that stand proud, Yogi's look like a bears now, hence the name Yogi (bear).

Lift Off.
Here is the picture that I got accepted into the Guild of Aviation Artists 2009 show. http://www.gava.org.uk
Depicting the launch of the Saturn 5, Apollo 11 mission. Because of the 40 year anniversary I wanted to try and capture the event in a slightly different way. Here we are part of the crowd watching the event. I hoped to try and draw us into the picture wanting to be able to be part of the moment, the history. I suppose that with such a momentus event it was always going to be hard.

Photoshop girl portrait.
This is another test using a photo my mate Taf took. (www.taffmanton.com) I thought the lighting was great on it and hope to be able to capture that with the brush tool in Photoshop. By zooming in and out the detail can be increased. However this can upset the overall composition.
Please feel free to add comments of thoughts you may have. Thanks John.

Style Machine
Good news. The studio where I have space in London, Style Machine, has a website now up and running. Have a look..
Here you can see some of my commercial work (mainly cars), storyboards and visuals. Todays image is more in keeping with this.
Above is a visual of an Opel Insignia as a design proposal.
I used Copic inks before scanning the image in and finishing in Photoshop.

This is another cgi test done this time in Corel painter X. Good ref and a lot of pushing colour and textures around.
Some of these images our on my websight http://www.thomosix.co.uk/ but as I come across things I have photographes or scanned I am trying to get them on here.
My thanks to Tatiana who has linked to this blog.

Material Girl.
Material folds. Test.
A slide show of a test done in Photoshop. I used a William Whitaker image as ref. A good lesson, although I did spend a long time on it. I saved when I remembered as I went along and have made a simple slide show. I will put up a better jpg of the finnished pic.

In the begining there was darkness, Let there be light.
Hi.
My name is John. Son of Charles Thompson (aviation
artist and Ford designer, Cortina Mk 1 and others. Hope to put some of his work on here one day).
I have been looking at the artists here for a while, and have liked what I have seen.
I hope you will find my work of interest.
More work to follow as I get aquainted with the blog World.
This is a Photoshop test trying to create skin texture with multiple layers.
